Visit lots of ancient sites on a long off road cycle tour from Avebury to Windmill Hill, along the Wansdyke and back up Kennet AvenueĪfter lunch on the top of White Ridge, I head westwards through some remnants of ancient settlements and a couple of cairns and down to the East Dart to find the Beehive Hut. Large sarsen stone in the churchyard thought to be removed from the Neolithic Millbarrow A clear embankment and "wall" remains at the western side of the flattened area between the various rock outcrops. Īt the northern part of the summit of Yar Tor is seen to be the remains of what is classified as a "Tor Enclosure", thought to be of neolithic origins. I followed the ruined triple row downhill to the north, and was pretty sure I could make out remnants of. This has been helped by a lot of clearance of gorse etc. The Yar Tor triple stone row is much clearer to see than I remember it being decades ago, when I can barely remember finding much at all. Almost certainly what has become known as the Yar Tor SE rows is a section of the main triple row which has become separated from the main part of the rows. The top of the southern part of the tor has a clear ancient cairn built on top, but this has been made into a spiral shape, I believe during wartime when it was used as a lookout sh. Such a lovely day, I decided to go up to the top of Yar Tor to take in the views, despite my legs aching a bit by now. Whilst at the church, I have a look at the various ancient crosses in and around the churchyard, and Borlase's grave. I eventually got to it from Sperris Quoi.Īfter a day at St Ives, I go to Zennor to pay my respects to the Mermaid. I don’t quite know how I have never been to visit this before, and it takes a bit of finding, despite the fact it can be seen from a long way away on the hilltop, the problem is finding a path through the chest high gorse and brambles which takes you to it.
